Southgate School Bids Farewell to Mr Gordon Stubberfield
Posted on: December 16th 2016Southgate School bids farewell to a long serving and loyal friend of the school, Mr Gordon Stubberfield, who has resigned as Chair of Governors and Trustees.
Gordon has been a governor for over 23 years and in this time he has seen enormous changes both within our school, the borough of Enfield and in terms of government educational policy. He has worked with three Southgate Headteachers and has seen 11 Secretaries of State for Education come and go!
In 2014 he was named as Enfield’s Outstanding Governor, a real testament to his commitment and service. When interviewed about his time as a governor Gordon said: ‘“Governors should be interested in education and helping children develop. Dedication and reliability are essential and being prepared to make the time to be a governor with the desire to make a difference and drive improvement”
From our experience, this is exactly what Gordon embodied. He was passionate about improving the life chances of local children and raising standards at our school. He gave freely of his time and despite the incredible demands now being placed on unpaid volunteers such as him, he worked as a governor in three different schools, a truly remarkable commitment. He was Chair of Governors in 2009 when our school was judged to be ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted and he has been instrumental in our conversion to Academy status.
In the 2016 New Year’s Honours List, Gordon was awarded an MBE for Services to Education which was just reward indeed.
We wish him all the very best and thank him for his work on behalf of this school
