On Wednesday 8th March we celebrated International Women’s Day by organising a number of talks and workshops for our students. In total, over 1000 student participated in an activity on the day and all students will, over the coming weeks take part in themed PSHE tutorials.
We were lucky enough to have a number of inspirational women come in to speak to almost 100 female students about their stories and the challenges they have overcome and continue to face not only in their professional lives but also in other areas too. While they were here, they discussed at length the issues facing young women today and all were instrumental in advising the girls they spoke to about the skills and attitudes they will need to be resilient in dealing with discrimination, pressures bought about by social media, trolling and gender stereotyping.
All students in Years 7, 8 and 9 took part in an interactive presentation by Tender, an organisation that seeks to end domestic violence. The talk was adapted to support our agenda for IWD and they spoke about gender inequality and the effects on women of stereotyping.
Finally, Year 10 students were lucky to hear from Felicity Aston, who in 2012, became the first person to ski alone across the Antarctic land mass using only personal muscle power. And she did it alone! We are fortunate to be able to welcome her to celebrate our day.
