A Helping Hand

Posted on: April 18th 2020

With the national shortage of protective clothing and equipment for NHS workers and other key workers, Southgate School donated all of it’s Science Department goggles two weeks ago, (over 300 pairs in total), to the NHS and the Head of Therapies in Enfield, whose team are helping the most vulnerable in our immediate community,

It was heart-warming therefore to receive the below thank you which came via Sarah Deale,

Headteacher of Coppetts Wood Primary School and Children's Centre, who coordinated this. She said:

I just wanted to pass onto you this email from Simon, head of nursing in Lambeth. They were truly grateful for your generosity in collecting and giving goggles. I also gave a handful to the Head of Therapies in Enfield. She had staff going out to deal with tracheotomies etc in the community with two pairs of goggles for the entire team. When she gave one of them their own pair of goggles, they burst into tears with relief. You have really made a difference. Thank you.

The Head of Nursing and Quality in Lambeth, Simon Darnley also wrote:

Hi everyone,

I just want to say thank you so much for responding so kindly and quickly to our call for providing our staff with plastic goggles.

There has been a national shortage of goggles and the ones provided by the NHS are not really suited for working with Covid in mental health settings. Often  people have different understandings about the current situation and frequently are unable to comply with self isolation as well as being aggressive as part of the  illness.

The sturdy goggles you have provided went straight into use the minute we received them and are cleaned and reused constantly.

They have really reduced staff anxiety and prevented cross infection and we can’t thank you all enough.

We are about to open our first Covid mental health ward on Monday and your goggles will be an important part of the protection for staff.

Thank you from all of us at the South London and Maudsley NHS Mental Health Foundation Trust.
