Another wonderful evening at Southgate School
Posted on: July 11th 2019Last night was Presentation Evening, an annual awards event that recognises the achievements of some of our outstanding students. The hall was full with some 300 people who were addressed by our guest speaker, Tim Prendergast. Tim developed macular degeneration at the age of 8 but spoke with passion and humour about how he overcame the loss of 95% of his eyesight, to eventually stand on the winning podium, having won a gold medal at the Athens Paralympics. His story, his warmth and humility, along with his gritty determination, was inspirational and the audience gave him a great reception.
The rest of the evening was spent applauding the achievements of our students, who received awards for being best in subject for their Year group, for being nominated by their Tutor and finally Student of the Year Awards. There were lots of proud (and tearful!) parents in the audience who were further treated to some simply wonderful guitar and piano recitals and singing. It was a time to feel positive about our young people; so often these days the news around our youth is negative, but last night gave us all hope for the future.
