GCSE Exam Successes 2017
Posted on: August 24th 2017Congratulations to all Southgate students who once again have performed remarkably well in their GCSE exams!
At a time when everything seems to be changing, when curriculum and exams are getting significantly harder in English and mathematics and when our students are doing more exams than ever before, our results were remarkable.
The stated intention of the new, harder GCSEs, and the introduction of 1-9 grades for English and mathematics, was to stop ‘grade inflation’ and to introduce a raising of the bar so that only a small percentage of students could expect to get a top grade 9, yet Southgate students have risen to this challenge securing 34 grade 9s and numerous top grades across all other subjects.
Special mention must be made of the following students who gained a grade 9 in English Language, English Literature and mathematics and an A* or A in every other subject (bar a solitary B grade that crept in):
Maths | English Language | English Lit | Biology | Chemistry | Physics | Art & Design | French | Geography | History | Music | RE | Spanish | Drama | Electronics | Business Studies | |

Assistant Headteacher Miss Hussein, who along with Mrs Lingley has worked particularly closely with Year 11 students said, ‘Congratulations to our GCSE students who have shown dedication, commitment and resilience over the last two years of their studies. There was a real buzz on GCSE Results day and it was wonderful to see so many students achieve the grades they deserve. We are delighted that such a large number of students are able to continue their studies in our Sixth Form and we look forward to working with them during the next stage of their academic career. Well done Year 11!’
We at Southgate school are proud of the broad and balanced curriculum that we continue to offer and once again it is very pleasing to note the success of our Arts and Performing Arts subjects among our exceptional subject outcomes. Top performers this year were Triple Science with a collective 97% A*-C, French with 93% A*-C, RE with 90% A*-C and Music with 89% A*-C. Close behind was the History department with 83% A*-C and Drama and Electronics, each with 82%.
My thanks though, go to all colleagues across all subjects who work so hard to ensure that students leave with the grades that they are truly capable of.
