Year 12 Virtual Work Experience
Posted on: August 13th 2020Sila Durmus who was in Year 12 but will be in Year 13 from September reported back on virtual work experience undertaken with BP:
I was grateful to be accepted to BP’s virtual work experience programme after applying through speakers4schools. Many students, like myself, struggle to decide on what course to take at university so work experience is one of the best ways to explore different options. I have always enjoyed chemistry and so I developed an interest to study Chemical engineering in the future. This experience allowed me to learn about the industry and I had the opportunity to talk to professionals about their roles. The effect an engineer has on the world truly amazes me and how different sectors within the company help to achieve BP’s new ambition- for BP to become a net-zero company by 2050 or sooner, and to help the world get to net zero.
During the week, in addition to many informative career talks by current employees, I gained experience in:
â The energy industry
â Refining and products
â Engineering
â Drilling
â Geoscience
â low carbon/sustainability, communications.
I also had the chance to speak to new graduates who are at the beginning of their careers and the steps they are taking to be successful in their sectors.
I would like to add that I am thankful for my teachers at Southgate School who supported me through the week and allowed me to change my school timetable so that I could take part in this virtual work experience.
