Southgate School Enfield Borough Senior Boys Basketball Champions 2015/16

Posted on: March 4th 2016

The Senior Boys Basketball Team recently completed their league season in perfect fashion with an emphatic 64-34 victory in the Borough final against Winchmore School.

The crowd in a packed Southgate Sports Hall were treated to a very real masterclass in how to play effective TEAM basketball. In this performance, as with the whole season, the unselfish nature of the players was very much to the fore with everyone trying to find someone in a better shooting position than themselves.

The top scorer of the final was JoJo Moore with 26 points, who might have scored even more had he not been sidelined with a shoulder injury in the final quarter. In his time on court, he brought an awe-inspiring athleticism and an incredible finesse to the action, His baskets helped to take his season total past the 100 points mark, and reach a Senior team career total of 183 points. Jonathan Leslie was the next highest scorer on the day with 15 points and countless assists. His particular Senior Team career total was increased to 203 ponts as a result.

Omar Abidat, Andreas Halkou, Jonathan Leslie, JoJo Moore, Ben Moses, Kushal Patel, Ishmael Timbo amd Dominick Williams.

Season summary

This special team are ruthless in their determination to score and keep scoring. There are no great outward displays of emotion either when they have scored or when they have been fouled but a collective desire to keep the scorebard moving whatever the situation of the game. All of their fundamentals are so well learned and they all know each other’s game inside out.

Whilst some basketball teams can be dominated by individual exploits and performances, it is fair to say that this team are without egos. They work so hard for each other on both offence and defence. The fact that four of the players (JoJo Moore – 14.9 points, Dominick Williams – 14.1 points, Andreas Halkou – 10.5 points and Jonathan Leslie – 10.1 points) have averaged in double figures for the season, indicates how the responsibility for scoring has been shared around.

Unfortunately 6 of the 8 players will be leaving and heading off to University at the end of the year, so the rebuilding process will be a tough one. It is hard to replace the experience gained  whilst scoring 770 Senior career points!

With a view to the future, it is interesting to note that in their final competitive game, the Senior team conceded more points to the Year 10 team than against all but one of their previous opponents this year. This is surely an encouraging sign, showing as it does the scoring potential of the younger team.

It must however be added that in the same game the seniors accumulated a total of 95 points in the 40 minutes of basketball and won by 56 points!!

A remarkable team, a remarkable unbeaten season!
