Southgate School celebrates A Level success

Students and staff at Southgate School are celebrating after receiving their A Level grades today.

The sixth form students at the school, which is part of Middlesex Learning Trust have achieved even more of the very top grades than in previous years. Their exceptional results reflect the hard work and commitment shown by the students and staff, throughout their studies.

The students’ successes have enabled many of them to secure places at their chosen universities and on coveted apprenticeships.

While all students have done well, there have been some impressive individual performances. These include:

  • Gurkiran Duggal and Evangelos Smyrnaios, who both achieved A* grades in all three of their A-Level subjects, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Chemistry. This outstanding set of results means that they will both be going to their university of choice, Warwick in Gurkiran’s case where he will study, Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics (MORSE) in Evangelos’ case where he will study Mathematics
  • Sezer Daniels, Ephraim Haile and Eliza Sheldon each achieved two A*grades and an A; another superb set of results.
  • Kelsey Appleton- Chackal secured A* and two A grades in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics and will study Physics at university.
  • Sezer Daniels secured his grades in Mathematics, Chemistry and Art and will now go to The University of Cambridge to study Architecture.
  • Ephraim Haile achieved his grades in Economics, History and Government and Politics. He will now go to University College London to study Politics and International Relations.
  • Eliza Sheldon achieved her grades in Mathematics, Psychology and Chemistry and will now go to The University of Sheffield to study Biomedical Science with an industrial placement year.
  • Tess Hunter achieved a Distinction * in both Media and Business Cambridge Technical qualifications and a Distinction in BTEC Sport. Tess will go on to be one of only 30 candidates accepted at Oxford Brookes University to study BSc Children’s Nursing- a lifelong ambition as Tess herself has managed her studies alongside the challenges of having Type 1 Diabetes.
  • Andreas Michael, Nonso Chime and Hal Clements all achieved 2 Distinction * grades and a Distinction grade in their vocational courses and achieved places at their first-choice universities.
  • Stephanos Demosthenous, awarded 3 B grades in his A–Levels (Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics). The significance of these outcomes lies in the fact that Stephanos was critically ill during his time in our 6th form, a time that was incredibly trying for both him and of course, his family. His remarkable achievements are a testament to this young man’s determination, courage and academic ability.  Stephanos will now take a gap year with ambitions to apply to Kings College University for 2025 entry.

Adam Dodhia achieved his grades to get into The University of Manchester to study Computer Science, a particularly significant set of results considering as he sat his exams under the most difficult of family circumstances.

Akbar Ali, Dawud Sadiq and Josie Zissler also deserve special mention for their excellent outcomes achieving their first choice University places at Queen Mary University, The University of Warwick and The University of Durham.

Martin Lavelle Headteacher at Southgate School, said:

One of the joys of working in a school is the privilege of meeting so many talented, industrious and thoroughly decent young people who go on to achieve so much, often overcoming significant obstacles in the process of doing so. Let’s not forget the disruption of COVID that these young people had to contend with over some of the key years of their school education; to come as far as they have and to achieve so much is a testament to their resilience and spirit. The students at Southgate School absolutely embody this and we are all delighted to see so many of them do so well. Those who fear for the future of this country or disparage younger generations, should take heart from the young people who leave our school because time and again they prove themselves to be eminently capable of improving not only their own life chances, but the communities and societies to which they do and will, belong.
